An audio App to guide your Underground Railroad journey from Cincinnati to Cleveland.
The Ohio Freedom Path: Travel Underground Railroad History is a free audio guide available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app brings to life Ohio's remarkable Underground Railroad history on the path of the Ohio to Erie Trail, which begins in Cincinnati and ends in Cleveland.
The Ohio to Erie Trail fairly closely approximates one of the routes, taken by freedom seekers as they crossed the state, making their way north to Canada. The app uses geofencing to alert those walking or biking the trail to information about nearby Underground Railroad activity. Or you can listen to the fascinating stories and songs in the comfort of you own home. Treat it like a podcast in which you can choose whose story you want to hear.
Longtime Cleveland broadcaster Obie Shelton narrates stories and events found on historical markers in each of the 15 counties the Ohio to Erie Trail passes through. Other Clevelanders have given voice to poems, such as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's pointed "To the Union Savers of Cleveland," and personal observations, such as Horace Ford's recounting of family involvement, as well as speeches, letters and songs.
An interview, Joan Southgate, founder of Restore Cleveland Hope, revisits her walk across Ohio in the path of freedom seekers and reflects on her efforts over the past 20 years to reclaim Cleveland's Underground Railroad history. Although the app uses the Ohio to Erie Trail to encourage listeners to reflect on the experience of "putting their feet in the path" of freedom seekers, the curated material is available through the app and online to all interested in hearing about Ohio's rich Underground Railroad history.
